My earlier paintings were sometimes more symbolic, where I used geometric forms to represent arcs, seeds, trees and stones. I often liked to refine the image to just form and space, experimenting with the optical effects between the two. Colours were bold and the edges between the foreground and background were crucial to conveying an energy that activated the forms, as if they were alive and moving.
